Welcome to the Toolies!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, getting to try out and test new hunting gear is one of my favorite things about the sport of waterfowling. Yes, I love spending time with friends and family out in the field, and, yes, I enjoy the great outdoors and the sport itself, but I feel like a little boy at Christmas again whenever we get a new piece of duck hunting equipment to try out. I’d say it makes me giddy except Big Steven would make fun of me…so, let’s just say it makes me very happy…in a manly sort of way.
One of my favorite new pieces of duck hunting gear from this past year has got to be the Otter outdoors Final Attack Duck Blind Boat. This little amphibious duck blind was an absolute blast to get to use on the 3 or 4 trips we took it out on. The best way to describe the Final Attack is as a great duck boat which can also be converted in to a water blind, a permanent pit blind and even a portable land-based duck blind as well. Read More »
Well, it is that time of year again and excitement is in the air. That’s right, duck season opens here in Southern California this weekend on October 20th. While I am excited that the season is just about upon us all once more, I am also more than a little annoyed. You see, I usually go hunting in a group of at least 3 of us - myself, Big Steven and my buddy, Bob. My wife, Gina goes from time to time as well.
Every hunter out there has his own ideas on what the proper way to do just about anything is - the proper gun to use, the best load, the warmest jacket, the proper type of waders, the best blind set up, heck, even the best breakfast to eat. But, the thing everyone loves to argue about and no one can agree on is what is the best strategy for duck decoy placement. And, if you’re a newbie it can get pretty darn confusing…a lot of rookie waterfowlers seem to just close their eyes, toss out their spread and hope for the best. Some even pray…but when it comes to throwing out the best spread to bring birds in nice and close, God isn’t on your side. Lucky for you, the Hunting Sensei is.
